FAMILY FOREVER Angie Best’s EastEnders legend niece Sam Womack reveals poignant project she was working on with her before cancer news
EASTENDERS legend Sam Womack has revealed she was supposed to begin a poignant project with her aunt Angie Best before she was diagnosed with colon cancer.
Her son Calum Best revealed the heartbreaking news in an emotional post on Instagram yesterday and explained that the cancer has now spread to her liver.
He also admitted that she needs specialist care but isn’t able to fulfil the financial burdens completely on his own and requested help by setting up a GoFundMe page.
Following the sad admission, Sam took to her own social media to share Calum’s video and told her followers the aunt and niece duo were planning on working together prior to her diagnosis.
The actress battled breast cancer herself back in 2022 and underwent five months of treatment before being given the all-clear.
Posting the clip on her stories, she penned: “This is an appeal for my auntie Angie, Callum and I are doing as much as we can to help but we need support.
“Having just recovered from cancer myself, Angie and I wanted to start a recovery retreat together, just before she was diagnosed. Any help much appreciated.”
Sam also posted a link to the GoFundMe page on her feed as she wrote: “This is my Auntie Angie, and my cousin Calum.
“We are both helping as much as we can but we need support. Follow the link in my bio.”
Calum responded in the comments section as expressed: “Thank you Sam ur such a good woman, love you.”
Her followers also flocked to share their well-wishes as one said: “Just donated… sending positive vibes and love.”
Another wrote: “Noooo what, she’s the fittest person I know. So sorry.”
While a third added: “God bless you Angie and Calum such a lovely lady I send all my love to you xxx.”
Celebrity Big Brother star Calum, who is the son of the late former professional footballer George Best, began: “Hi everyone, I’ve been thinking long and hard over the past few weeks about how to write this.
“I wanted to get the words right, but when it comes to health, and when it comes to my mum, the only thing that really matters is honesty.
“A few weeks ago, my beautiful, wonderful mum was diagnosed with cancer.
“For as long as I can remember, she has lived her life rooted in health, fitness and wellbeing.
“She has always believed in taking care of the body, mind and soul. But as we all know, cancer doesn’t discriminate.
“It doesn’t care where you’re from, how you live, or how healthy you try to be. And now, it’s here – and it’s with my mum.”
The devastated star continued: “I’ll be honest, I haven’t cried in years but this has been an emotional rollercoaster I never expected to be on.
“We’ve reached a point where we felt it was important to share what we’re going through and, humbly, ask for help.
“My mum has been diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to her liver.
“To move forward, we need access to specialist care and professionals who can offer the right treatment.
“This is incredibly hard for me to say, but financially, I can’t carry this on my own. So we’ve created this GoFundMe page to ask for your support.”
Angie met football legend George at a dinner party in LA in 1975 and it was “love at first sight”.
The pair went on to get married the following year before welcoming Calum in 1981.
The couple separated the following year and divorced in 1986, following George’s problems with alcohol abuse and domestic violence.
George died in 2005, aged 59, from complications including a severe lung infection and multiple organ failure, stemming from long-term alcoholism and immunosuppression following a liver transplant in 2002.
