đ SHOCK!!! Corrieâs Christina finally locks lips with George â but off-screen, Amy Robbins hints at a reality TV debut that could surprise everyone!
Coronation Street actress Amy Robbins has opened up about her new on-screen romance â and revealed sheâs ready to take on the world of reality TV.
After a turbulent start on the cobbles, Amyâs character Christina Boyd has finally found love with undertaker George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley), in a storyline thatâs both touching and hilariously awkward.
From Widow to Romance â Christinaâs Second Chance
âItâs not quite Four Weddings and a Funeral,â Amy jokes, âbut Iâve gone from burying my husband to snogging the undertaker!â
The 54-year-old actress admits she was close to walking away from acting before Corrie offered her a permanent role. âWhen Charlotte [Jordan, who played Daisy Midgeley] said she was leaving, I thought that was it for me,â Amy confessed. âIâd completely resigned myself to the idea that my character had run its course. I was even thinking about other things I could do.â
But fate had other plans. âI got the call from Coronation Street in the summer saying they wanted Christina back full-time,â she said. âFate came along and said, âDo you want to do this?ââ
Returning to Weatherfield, Christina quickly found herself working with Shuttleworthâs funeral parlour â and falling for its owner. âChristina has never really been loved,â Amy explained. âNow sheâs met George and he makes her feel cared for. She canât believe her luck.â
âKissing George Was Like Snogging My Brother!â
While the romance looks natural on screen, Amy admits that kissing her co-star Tony Maudsley was a bit strange at first â because theyâve been close friends for 25 years.
âIt was awkward at first because weâve known each other forever,â she said. âIt was like kissing my brother! But now it feels completely natural. Thereâs so much laughter on set â from the moment we arrive to when we go home.â
Their friendship dates back to 2001, when they starred together in ITVâs My Beautiful Son. Since then, their families have remained close. âTonyâs even been to my mumâs house, and my husband Bob and he are great mates. Bob doesnât mind at all â he knows itâs just part of the job.â
Life Imitates Art
Amy, whoâs been married to actor Bob Daws for 22 years, says she and Christina share some common traits. âSheâs not perfect, and Iâm not either,â she smiled. âThatâs what I love about her â sheâs flawed, funny, and full of life.â
Sheâs also grateful for Coronation Streetâs commitment to writing strong storylines for women over 50. âItâs a lovely thing to be part of. The show gives women of my age a voice â and thatâs really important.â
Off screen, Amyâs enjoying a new chapter too. âMy children are grown up, and Iâve suddenly realised I can rediscover myself a bit. Iâm saying yes to more things.â
âIâd Love to Do MasterChef or Strictlyâ
When asked about reality TV, Amyâs enthusiasm shines through. âWould I like to go on MasterChef? Yes, in a heartbeat,â she said. âI love cooking. Strictly would be amazing too, although Iâve never danced in my life! Iâm a Celebrity? No thank you. Emily [Atack, her niece] did brilliantly â I donât think anyone could top that.â
A dedicated Samaritans volunteer, Amy says her outlook on life has shifted. âIf youâre lucky enough to have your family around you and a handful of good friends, youâre rich indeed.â
Living the Dream
For Amy, being on Coronation Street is the real prize. âIâve always wanted to be in Corrie,â she said. âIt was my dream as a little girl, and now Iâm here. If I never get another acting job again, I wonât mind.â
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8pm on ITV, with episodes also available on ITVX.
