Coronation Street fans think another death could be on the cards. The world’s longest-running TV soap crossed over with Emmerdale on Monday night for a historic special episode known as Corriedale, and fan favourite Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) lost his life in a horrific pileup on the way back from Debbie Webster’s wedding, whilst others were left injured.

In the build-up to the catastrophic event, Kevin Webster had discovered that, earlier this year, his brother Carl was driving the car that ran Tyrone Dobbs over and left him without the ability to walk. Having tried to out him during the wedding to no avail, Carl ended up drunk behind the wheel and tried to place the blame on his dementia-stricken sister Debbie by placing her behind the wheel when she was out cold.

Kevin, whose marriage to Abi ended earlier this year when he discovered she had been having an affair with Carl, had considered switching his brother’s life support off at the end of the special episode, but didn’t. When Carl came round in Tuesday’s episode, medics revealed that an underlying heart condition had sent him into shock following the crash, and Debbie instantly claimed that she was driving the car.

This was much to Kevin’s dismay, who tried to argue that the bruises were on the wrong side if she was driving, but Debbie insisted: “I’ve told you what went on. I’m not going through it all again. I know you hate Carl, but it’s not his fault. It’s mine. Now go home.” Instead of going home, Kevin raced back to Carl’s bedside to have it out with him.

He raged: “She’s confused, You’ve got in her head. You’re lying. I know you! Did you even think she was alive when you did it?: Or did you think you were dragging a dead body over to save your own skin. You don’t know the half! I was here yesterday. These machines saving your life…and for a moment…”

Carl laughed and asked Kevin what stopped him from switching the machines off, he said: “The alarms started going. I thought someone had done the job for me. Karma.” It was then that Carl scoffed: “Yeah, well, it didn’t work, did it? I’m still here.”

Kevin hit back: “Yeah, well, let’s see for how long, eh?” In the final scene, Debbie was seen looking in a mirror, as she came to terms with the fact that the bruising from her seatbelt in the crash were indeed on the right hand side of her body, meaning that Kevin was in fact right.

Following the dramatic scenes, fans rushed to social media to share their hopes that Kevin could be the key to Carl’s downfall after so much drama.

One viewer wrote on X: “Anyone else kind of want Kevin to beat Carl to death with a spanner from Webster’s Garage for leaving Debbie in the driver’s seat so they’d think she was driving?” Another said: “I need Kevin to kill Carl with his bare hands when he finds out that Carl framed Debbie and left her to die!”

Another wrote: “They will know by the injuries who was sat where in the crash. Carl won’t get away with it,” and a fourth, who had tuned in early on ITVX, said: “starting my day with Carl alive & well has ruined it already, ” whilst another simply asked: “Why the f*** is Carl still alive mind you?!”

Aside from a non-canon special when Coronation Street and EastEnders collided for a Children In Need special, Corriedale marked the first time the long-running serial, which began 12 years before Emmerdale, crossed over with another soap.

The morning after the broadcast, it was revealed that the special had been a massive hit with fans as it peaked with 4.7 million viewers (averaging 4.2million viewers across the hour).

The impressive live overnight audience figures are the highest live TV ratings for a soap in over a year, and the biggest TV peak audience for a soap since 2022 (outside of Christmas Day episodes).
